Bible Verse Ad On Billboard Accepted Then Refused By Agency

Bible Verse Accepted One Moment, Then Denied The Next Morning.

Starkville, Mississippi recently made headlines twice: once for refusing to grant a permit for a “gay pride” parade, and again for prohibiting the renting out of a billboard to a man who intended to use it to display a Bible verse condemning homosexuality.

According to the website, OneNewsNow.com, the city originally refused to grant the permit for the gay pride parade, but subsequently reversed its decision.  So, in response to the city’s decision, resident, Randy Vaughan took the initiative to rent out the billboard in which he hoped to display the scripture, Isaiah 3:9:

“The look on their faces testifies against them; they parade their sin like Sodom; they do not hide it.  Woe to them!  They have brought disaster upon themselves.”

bible verseVaughan commented that he was impressed upon how appropriate the Bible verse was for today by stating, “That just floored me when I read that, and I thought, Just like it was then, it’s the same today.”

Vaughan paid $200 to Lamar Advertising to rent out the billboard space with the Bible verse.  He said that the agency initially agreed to his request, but the next morning he received notice that they refused to display the Bible verse.

According to OneNewsNow, who had contacted Lamar Advertising, they refused to comment, but did say that it reserves the right to deny any message it decides upon.

Lamar Advertising is headquartered in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and manages over 340,000 outdoor signs in the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico.

Upon examining the company’s website, there are no explicit rules or disclaimers on service for “controversial ads” which would include biblical passages.  However, there is a promotional video which states that the company “lives by the Golden Rule” (do unto others as you would have others do unto you).  This may be the caveat for their decision regarding retracting the Bible verse.

Vaughan’s thoughts on why the company had refused to publish the Bible verse was that they feared the backlash from the gay community.

“They just indicated that they were sorry, they were a publicly held corporation, that they felt it was in their best interest to make that decision.”
