What Does Godly Discipline For Kids Look Like And Is It Achievable?

disciplineThe words discipline and disciple are closely linked.  Scripture tells us to disciple our children in the ways of God.  It means that we are to teach our children about godly characteristics, how to walk in them, how to walk with integrity, how to lead a God-honoring lifestyle, and what the Word means.  In short, we are to teach them to be Christ-like.

When examining the world’s system of discipline, we have to first look at whether it lines up with the Bible.

  • Proverbs 10:17 “Whoever heeds discipline shows the way to life, but whoever ignores instruction leads others astray.”  Does the world minimize the effectiveness of parents disciplining their child?
  • Proverbs 13:1 “A wise son heeds his father’s instruction but a mocker does not respond to rebukes.”  Are children taught to respect their parents/those in authority?
  • Proverbs 29:17 “Discipline your children and they will give you peace; they will bring you the delights you desire.”  Is your house peaceful?
  • Ephesians 6:1-2 “Children obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.  Honour your father and mother which is the first commandment with a promise.”  Do your children honour you, or are dismissive/argumentative of what you have to say?

Chas Funderburg examines the world’s restrictions on discipline, and how parents in today’s age can effectively discipline their children.  He discusses the flaws in our world’s system of child-rearing, and provides practical advice to parents on which methods work best in terms of discipline.  He also talks about what scripture says about discipline, and touches on what parents can do if wrongful allegations have been brought against them (it does happen).
