High School in Western Texas Alpine Evacuated Due to Shooting

Police in a western Texas Alpine school say there is an active shooter on Thursday morning.

One person was shot and wounded before the shooter died of a self-inflicted gunshot, according to Brewster County Sheriff Ronny Dodson.

Additionally, a police officer was accidentally shot by a marshal as officers responded to the first shooting.  Their condition was not immediately released.

The Details

Police evacuated the school Thursday morning reporting that initially there were two shooters involved.  However, late Thursday morning, with the initial shooter dead, police determined there was no other shooter involved.  One of the incidents erupted in the school’s band hall, and the names of those involved have not been released.

According to CNN, a junior who attended the school began second period with a teacher outside her class telling students to evacuate the classrooms.  According to the witness, the teacher told everyone to get into the closet.

“We heard someone yelling and running down the hall. We all started crying.” she recollected.

After some time had elapsed, an officer banged on the classroom door and released the students.
The student reported that she saw blood on the cafeteria floor as she passed it exiting the building.  One of the officers, she said, told them to keep their hands raised and run out of the building.  The student said that she only saw the blood briefly.
“It was so scary and very intense. I’ve never been so scared in my life.”
The school has 280 students in attendance, and was initially placed on lockdown.  However, in reporting the incident, the Alpine Avalanche newspaper posted on Facebook that students were being evacuated by 9:40 CT.
Thursday’s shooting came just over two weeks after the new school year opened.
