We all know what these words mean.  Temptation is when Satan is trying to get you to engage in sinful behaviour.  Temptation is something that you avoid falling into, you gain strength to endure by leaning in towards God, and speaking against it by using scripture.  It is something that can be overcome because 1. God will never allow any temptation beyond what you can endure and 2. God always provides a way to escape.

Bondage is when you are being held captive by a sin, are struggling to break free, but can’t.  Simple, right?  Maybe not.  These two words may be steps into a life far from Christ.

temptationThe “Steps”

  1. Temptation.  Satan begins by placing sinful thoughts into your head.  As much as you try to cast them down, your mind is being bombarded by these thoughts.  You try to fight them and resist the urge to give in.  Some temptations are easy, but man, this one is hard!  Better not think about it, because once I have, step two may happen….
  2. Meditating.  The thoughts have gone beyond just words rattling around in our heads.  We’ve began to entertain them.  We think about them.  Oh, the possibilities….  But *phew* we haven’t acted on them!  We’re “safe”, but not really because they have begun to take root in our heart.
  3. Habitual Sin.  The Holy Spirit begins to convict us that our thoughts are wrong.  We confess and ask for forgiveness.  Yet the desire is so strong….  Our actions begin to manifest what is in our hearts.  We go through the cycle of repent, ask for forgiveness, and fall into temptation over and over.  We really don’t want to let go of it, though.  It’s just too enticing.  Our hearts are becoming hard, and our whispers for forgiveness are becoming few and far in between.
  4. Bondage.  Habitual sin has taken root.  You keep engaging in the same behaviour with the same destructive results.  Only you don’t really care to make a change… not really, anyway.  Your family is beginning to be effected by your choices.  They voice their concerns only to be met with indignation and anger.  The Holy Spirit within you keeps convicting you and asking you to turn away from sin.  Yet eventually all the voices become quiet.  Your family avoids you/doesn’t speak to you.  You can’t hear the Holy Spirit because you’re not even speaking to God.  You’ve entered into willful disobedience and feel far from Him.  God releases you to your sin.   You know what you are doing is wrong, but can’t seem to break free.  You’re stuck.

Shanta Chester discusses the topic of temptation and bondage.  She advises readers as to how to avoid the slippery slope of Satan’s deception, and what to do to be delivered from bondage into victory.
